Taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside above , Christy O'Connor Jr.'s course at Amendoeira is a challenge. Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making, and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary.

Christy, whose course is the lower of the two and situated mostly on the water plain, plans to create a Moorish atmosphere on some of the fairways and greens, to reflect local history, and provide orange groves to fit in with the area's rich reputation for producing that particular fruit.

'The course also has my version of the Amen Corner, starting at the seventh. We have a lake which runs from the 9th, through the 8th and into the 7th, so it is a kind of a chain reaction and the 7th will be the first of it.
