A record-setting number of 800 golfers competed in the 2010 Troon Challenge, vying for a coveted spot in the National Finals presented by Callaway Golf. That number has been cut to just 50 players who earned their right by competing in two-man teams during a series of qualifiers held at 15 Troon Golf courses around the country.
The finals will be held on August 28-29 at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The two-day event will determine this year’s National Champions in both the Gross and Net divisions.
Troon Golf wishes the best of luck to each team competing in the event!
The following clip is Part 3 of the series featuring Reagan Davis (“The Persimmon Professor”) from Troon North Golf Club. Reaganexplores the unique traits of each era of golf club design that might help identify those old clubs you’ve been holding on to over the years.
Oddly enough, “62” seemed to be the preferred number at Yocha Dehe Golf Club in California with a record number of 62 teams playing in the Troon Challenge event. First place honors in the Gross Division were earned by John Hayes & Dave Kowski with their score of 62. The father-son team of Brett & Chase Johnson advanced in the Net Division with a score of…you guessed it, 62 – which of course matches last year’s winning Net score of 62 shot by Gary Magana and Rich Gregson. Both teams would undoubtedly take a pair of 62s at the National Finals at Troon North Golf Club in August.
Talking Stick Golf Clubin Arizona also hosted a successful Troon Challenge with results less peculiar than those at Yocha Dehe, but still exciting. In fact Peter Lugowski & Mike Kosolcharoen’s score of 66 was just enough to win by one stroke in the Gross Division, while the Net Division was decided by a scorecard playoff. As a result, Todd Ney & Timothy Randall will be representing Talking Stick at the National Finals in the Net Division.
The next Troon Challenge event will be held this weekend at Whirlwind Golf Club in Arizona. Entry forms and information on fees are still available for this event at www.TroonChallenge.com.

Summer temperatures aren’t the only things on the rise this June. Competition is also heating up after four exhilarating Troon Challenge events were held at Troon Golf facilities in the Southwest.
Golf Club of Estrellain Arizona saw repeat winners from last year in Steve Blackford and Joe Fox in the Gross Division (66). It was Steve and Joe who went on to capture the National Finals Gross Division Championship at Troon North in 2009 and will look to defend their overall title in August. The Net Division came down to the wire with Bob Wood and Joe Temple advancing after a scorecard playoff win over KevinCruikshank and Nick Holmes.
In Southern California, Clayton Snow and George Gottschalk played in Indian Wells Golf Resort’sinaugural Troon Challenge event and took first place in the Gross Division. Chris Long and Mike Lee placed first in the Net Division.
While Ty Hawkinson and Randl Haschke will be moving on to the finals in the Gross Division along with Don Waddell and Rick Phillips in the Net Division, it was Lincoln Ragsdale who had the shot of the tournament so far with a hole-in-one on No. 12 at Poston Butte. Lincoln aced the 177-yard par three to win a five-day, five-night vacation in Hawaii!
A strong field of 20 teams played for qualifying positions at The Phoenician in Arizona as well. Temperatures rising to 110 degrees held little effect on Brett Martin and Jon Urqhart, who shot 59 to advance in the Gross Division. After Nick Holmes and Kevin Cruikshank’s close loss at Estrella, the team returned to The Phoenician where they had won last year’s Net qualifier. Chuck Kennedy and Roger Williams held off the defending team with a score of 60 – good enough for a four shot win.

In an effort to make the game more accessible to junior golfers and their families, Troon Golf is partnering with Callaway to launch the new Troon Family Golfprogram at participating facilities throughout the United States.
The program allows juniors to play for free after 3 p.m. at more than 60 Troon Golf facilities when playing with a paying adult. Each junior also receives complimentary Callaway rental clubs to use during their round. The offer is that simple and is available 365 days a year.
It’s obvious that for many parents, their busy schedules seem to be pulling them in every direction. Weekends can often become more about shuttling kids between soccer games and dance recitals than spending time together. So, in the spirit of turning your “Super Shuttle Weekends” back into quality time as a family, here are:
5 Reasons to Play Golf with Your Kids
1. A round of golf means hours of quality time together.
2. It gets everyone outdoors and away from video games, TV and cell phones.
3. Golf provides an opportunity to teach kids many of life’s lessons like honesty, commitment & integrity through the rules and etiquette of the game.
4. It introduces kids to a game they can play their entire life.
5. Golf is healthy. Walking an 18-hole golf course is equivalent to walking over 3.5 miles.
Maybe you have your own reasons for encouraging kids to join their parents and play golf. Feel free to leave us a comment to let us know what you think.
Book your next round as a family by contacting your favorite Troon Golf facility or calling 1.888.TROON U.S. and mentioning the Troon Family Golf program. The offer is based on availability and juniors are defined as golfers 15 years of age and under.
